In the pre‑dawn hours of July 17, 1812, a band of Canadian voyageurs is ordered to drag heavy artillery across the rugged interior of Mackinac Island, a task made worse by the presence of a looming British force. A young man, bitter toward his English commanders and haunted by the prospect of using his people as pawns, decides to abandon the haul and flee into the wilderness. His desertion sets off a deadly chase as a Sioux warrior is dispatched to bring him back.

Through tangled woods, over moss‑covered logs and fragrant violets, he darts from tree to tree, the island’s wild beauty both a refuge and a trap. The pursuit drives him to a hidden fissure in a towering rock, where a faint candle flickers inside a narrow cavern. Inside, he discovers a sleeping woman wrapped in furs, her mysterious presence hinting at both a possible sanctuary and a new danger.
