A condemned Earthman finds himself dropped onto a minuscule, self‑contained world that orbits a distant star. The asteroid is cloaked in a thin mist, its surface dotted with tropical vegetation and a breathable atmosphere held together by artificial gravity. The Martian patrol that delivered him leaves a terse warning before blasting off, leaving the prisoner to confront the alien landscape alone.
Soon he discovers he isn’t the only human cast out here. A rag‑tag band of exiles, rough‑shod and wary, have already made a precarious camp among the strange foliage. When a hulking, shaggy creature bursts from the underbrush, the newcomers scramble to defend themselves, and the newcomer’s quick thinking earns him an unexpected role as their leader. The story follows his struggle to survive, to forge uneasy alliances, and to carve a place for himself on this hostile, yet oddly familiar, outpost.

Best known for eerie, folkloric tales set in the Appalachian Mountains, this prolific American writer brought regional legend and old-time music into fantasy and horror in a way that still feels distinctive. He also worked across science fiction, mystery, westerns, and historical fiction, building a career that ranged far beyond one genre.
