Aboard a luxury liner cutting through the North Atlantic fog, a restless teenager named Harvey drifts from one indulgent pastime to the next. He’s the pampered son of a railway magnate, accustomed to endless pocket‑money, fine clothes, and a string of holiday resorts. His brash confidence and habit of flaunting wealth make him a nuisance to the seasoned travelers sharing the deck, and his boredom grows as the ship rolls toward the fishing fleet off the Grand Banks.
When a sudden mishap sends Harvey overboard, he is rescued by a grizzled crew of Newfoundland fishermen who run their own rugged world of nets, ice, and hard labor. Stripped of his comforts, he is thrust into a life where survival depends on skill, teamwork, and respect for the sea. As the men teach him the ropes—literally and figuratively—Harvey begins to discover a side of himself that his privileged upbringing never allowed him to see.

Best known for The Jungle Book, Kim, and poems like “If—,” he wrote adventure stories and verse that helped shape English-language reading for both children and adults. His work is still lively and memorable, even as readers continue to debate the imperial ideas woven through much of it.
