A young midshipman, far from the familiar decks of his ship, finds himself climbing the rugged peaks that crown wild Wales. From a lofty perch he watches the sun melt into the sea, the valleys below scattered with white‑washed cottages, grazing sheep and a lone church spire. The landscape is both breathtaking and bewildering, its tangled Welsh place‑names slipping through his memory as he struggles to locate the village his brother mentioned. His restless spirit bursts into an exuberant chant, echoing the proud, imperial optimism of his navy life.
Below the summit a mournful, otherworldly wail drifts up from a solitary, weather‑worn hut, hinting at the ancient superstitions that still linger in these remote hills. The midshipman’s curiosity draws him toward the isolated dwelling, where the locals cling to old customs and whisper of a woman accused of witchcraft. As he steps into this shadowed world, he must decide whether to remain a detached observer or become entangled in a perilous drama that could alter his fate and the lives of those bound to the mountain’s harsh justice.
