Description

The tale begins with Ben, the boatswain’s son, who is pulled from his quiet Gosport home onto the decks of the Royal George, one of England’s finest warships. Though he’d rather be playing marbles, his father insists he become a powder‑monkey, and the boy quickly learns to scramble up the rigging and handle the ship’s routine. He forms an unlikely bond with Jerry Dix, a one‑legged fiddler‑cook who watches over him when his father is busy.

All this unfolds during the Seven Years’ War, as the Royal George joins a fleet blockading the French at Brest. A sudden gale forces the squadron into Torbay, and once the weather clears the admiral orders a chase after the French fleet that has slipped toward Quiberon Bay. Fog rolls in, visibility drops, and the ships must sail closely together, heightening tension as they finally glimpse the enemy on the horizon. The narrative captures the awe of massive sailing warships and a boy’s first taste of naval combat.
