The Young Bridge-Tender; or, Ralph Nelson's Upward Struggle

Ralph Nelson is a determined teenager on the brink of adulthood, living in the modest cottage beside the swinging bridge that links the sleepy village of Westville with the bustling town of Eastport. When his father’s sudden death leaves the family bereft, Ralph and his widowed mother are thrust into a struggle not only to survive on a modest weekly wage but also to protect the land their father once owned. A missing bundle of deeds becomes the focal point of their worries, pitting them against the influential Squire Paget, who claims the village’s right to the waterfront.

With the bridge’s tolls beginning to flow and the promise of future growth on the horizon, Ralph devises a plan to locate the elusive papers, suspecting that someone may be hoarding them for personal gain. As he balances his duties as the new bridge‑tender, a garden, and his mother’s sewing work, the young Nelson confronts the harsh realities of small‑town politics while clinging to hope that honesty and hard work will secure his family’s future.
