At the break of dawn, the newly commissioned gun‑brig Shark cuts through the calm waters off the Congo, its sails unfurling under a gentle southeast breeze. First‑mate Lieutenant Seaton oversees the crew as they ready the ship for a patrol, the air filled with the clatter of rigging and the distant call of gulls. When a pair of foreign sails appear on the horizon—a brig and a schooner—tension spikes, and the young midshipman Grenvile is sent aloft to identify the strangers.
The captain orders the Shark to give chase, hoisting studding sails and steering toward the mysterious vessels that seem to be slipping out of the Congo’s mouth. As the gun‑brig gains on its quarry, the crew must balance the rigors of seamanship with the uneasy knowledge that they are part of a squadron tasked with intercepting slave ships. The opening minutes set a vivid picture of naval life, camaraderie, and the looming moral conflict that will drive the story forward.
