In a sun‑drenched garden on the banks of the Drammensvejen, a lively group of townsfolk gathers for an afternoon of conversation, craft, and song. Mrs Halm, a widowed civil servant, sits with her daughter Anna while the young writer Falk, a theology student, a timber merchant, and a printer trade witty verses and clink glasses. Their banter, peppered with lyrical improvisations, already hints at the tangled feelings that will surface among friends and acquaintances.
The play unfolds as a bright, social comedy that examines the expectations surrounding love, marriage, and artistic ambition in a provincial community. Characters such as the earnest Miss Skare, the thoughtful Svanhild, and the eager Lind bring contrasting perspectives that spark both humor and gentle critique. As flirtations spark and old habits are questioned, the audience is invited to watch the delicate dance between duty and desire, all set against the fragrant backdrop of blooming fruit trees.

A restless, sharp-eyed dramatist who helped change modern theater, he brought ordinary family life, social pressure, and private rebellion to the center of the stage. His plays still feel alive because they ask uncomfortable questions with remarkable clarity.
