Dick Lionheart

Dick is a wiry, hungry boy who spends his days shuttling between a cramped cottage and the noisy tin works, dreaming of the roar of steam engines while scraping by on bread and dripping. He endures the sharp rebukes of his uncaring relatives and the bruising overseer at the gate, yet his spirit stays bright, especially when the kindly fireman Paddy offers a glimpse of something beyond the soot‑filled yard.

In a hidden corner of the boiler house, Paddy reveals a tiny, trembling terrier he hopes Dick can raise, sparking a fierce protectiveness the boy has never felt before. The fireman also whispers of an uncle in Ironboro—a fitter who could give Dick a chance to work with the machines he loves and perhaps a way out of his oppressive home. With a new companion in his arms and a secret promise of escape, Dick’s world suddenly feels full of possibilities.
