In the sleepy hamlet of Akspoele, a quiet Sunday morning is shattered when doors swing open and a crowd gathers on the cobbles, drawn by an unexpected procession. The village clerk, Fortuné Massijn, known for his odd fascination with strangers, arrives with a flamboyant entourage: two gaunt youths dressed in black velvet, bright red stockings and hats, their faces painted in a glossy ebony mask and hands ending in claw‑like digits. Their striking appearance and the whispered claim that they are “princes from Congo” leave the locals both bewildered and intrigued.
Massijn proudly presents his mysterious guests to the townspeople, introducing them to the innkeeper, the retired schoolmaster and a shy tavern maid. The scene swirls with a mixture of curiosity, nervous laughter, and uneasy hospitality as the villagers grapple with the exotic strangers in their midst. Listeners will be drawn into the vivid tableau of a rural community confronting the unknown, setting the stage for humor, tension, and unexpected encounters.
