In the bleak quarter between London's City and West End, young Valeria Brinton finds herself thrust into married life under a gray sky and a hurried ceremony. Orphaned and with few friends, she leans on her uncle and the loyal family clerk, Benjamin, as she takes the hand of the nervous Eustace Woodville, a man whose own family opposes the union.
