The Scientific American Boy; Or, The Camp at Willow Clump Island

A lively group of boys from a New Jersey boarding school find their world turned upside down by Bill, the “Scientific American Boy.” Gifted with a brilliant mind and guided by his world‑traveling civil‑engineer uncle, Bill leads his friends into experiments and inventions that feel far beyond their ordinary schoolyard games. Their camaraderie is rooted in curiosity, and the narrator’s reverence for Bill’s ingenuity sets the tone for the whole adventure.

One rainy afternoon the narrator uncovers an old attic trunk filled with glass tubes, brass rods, and a mysterious black‑walnut box marked with the initials of a secret society. Inside lie the “Records and Chronicles” of the Society for the Scientific Investigation, Exploration and Exploitation of Willow Clump Island, sparking a decision to preserve and share the boys’ daring exploits for future generations.

The story then shifts to a crisp Christmas vacation, where Bill joins the narrator, his brothers, and neighborhood friends on a frozen canal. As they glide across the ice, the chill wind tests Bill’s skating skills and hints at the challenges the young inventors will soon face together.
