More than a century ago a humble farmer named Nils Troelsson acquired the manor of Ryd, building a prosperous estate through hard work and a large family. His eldest son, Troels, inherited the land and renamed himself Finne after his mother's Finnish home, quickly turning fields into fertile ground and earning a reputation for both wealth and piety.

At forty, Troels wed a young woman of noble church background, whose icy disposition soon clashed with his expectations of a dutiful wife. When her coldness grew into open resistance, he sought advice from clergy and physicians, hoping patience and divine providence would restore harmony. Frustrated, Troels begins to stray, indulging in excesses that threaten the stability of the household and hint at a looming personal collapse.
