A humble garden mouse named Timmy Willie is whisked away from his quiet burrow when he slips into a vegetable hamper bound for the city. The sudden jolt of a horse‑drawn cart drops him into a bustling household, where a startled cook summons the cat and a polished town mouse, Johnny, greets him at a surprisingly elegant dinner. Timmy quickly discovers that city life is full of clattering dishes, noisy boys, and unfamiliar foods that make his stomach turn.
As Johnny’s well‑mannered friends introduce Timmy to their refined customs, the country mouse finds the constant commotion and strange meals overwhelming. He longs for the peace of his sunny garden, the simple fare of roots and seeds, and the gentle songs of birds. Yet the allure of the town’s bright lights and curious strangers keeps him pondering whether to stay or find his way back home.

Beloved for creating Peter Rabbit and a whole cast of memorable animals, she paired gentle humor with beautifully observed illustrations. Her stories still feel fresh because they come from a real love of nature, country life, and the mischievous side of childhood.
