When Buffalo Ran

The story opens on the endless prairie of the early twentieth‑century Great Plains, where rolling swells of grass meet a sky that seems to touch the earth. Small family lodges cluster along the shallow rivers, their cottonwoods the only splash of green in a sea of gold. In this world the people live close to the land, drawing food from buffalo, deer, berries and the river itself. Their days are marked by the rhythms of hunting, gathering, and the simple lessons passed from elders to children.

Through the eyes of a young boy, Wikis, we glimpse a life of play and learning among a handful of families, punctuated by the occasional gathering of the larger tribe. One spring, his world is shattered when a hostile force attacks the camp, sending men and women into frantic defense. His mother, singing fierce songs, drags him and his sister toward safety, a harrowing escape that imprints the sounds of war cries, gunfire, and a mother’s fierce love onto his memory. The narrative captures both the beauty of the plains and the sudden, stark reality of conflict.
