A small band of Moravian missionaries sets out from the remote settlement of Nain, intent on reaching the distant outpost of Okkak. Their convoy—two sledges, a handful of men, a woman, a child, and a team of hardy sled dogs—slides across a seemingly solid sheet of Arctic ice. Along the way they are guided by local Inuit companions, whose knowledge of the frozen sea proves both practical and uneasy in a landscape where the wind can turn the ice into a treacherous, breathing surface.
As daylight fades, the sea beneath the ice begins to swell, producing eerie sounds that hint at hidden danger. A sudden storm whips up snow and wind, and the ice cracks, groaning like distant artillery. The travelers are forced to race toward the shoreline, battling a moving floor that rises and falls with each wave. Their desperate scramble onto the beach offers a fleeting glimpse of relief, while the shattered ice behind them collapses in a thunderous cascade.
