In a quiet corner of the Finnish countryside, a modest parsonage named Tyynelä clings to the shore of a wide lake. Surrounded by gentle meadows, birch groves and a small wooden pier, the place feels both tenderly crafted and tinged with an unspoken melancholy. The slow rhythm of waves and distant sailboats creates a stillness that invites reflection, while occasional sounds—a cow lowing, a duck’s splash—break the hush.
The resident pastor, Aarnio, receives a letter from his former university friend Olavi Kalm, who promises to arrive by ship for a summer visit. As the news spreads, Aarnio’s wife Elli busies herself preparing the house, dusting furniture, arranging photographs, and dressing carefully after years without such occasion. Their quiet routine hints at hidden hopes and anxieties, setting the stage for an encounter that may stir the calm of their secluded world.
