The Mission

In the autumn of 1828 an ailing gentleman drifts through his memories of the tragic loss of the Grosvener, wondering whether his wife and children survived the wreck. His son, Alexander Wilmot, wrestles with doubt and a burning curiosity, eventually deciding to join an expedition to Africa despite his father's reservations. The early chapters follow Alexander’s restless preparations, his uneasy consent from Sir Charles, and the bittersweet farewell that sends him off on a voyage across storm‑tossed seas.

Once ashore, Alexander encounters a vivid tapestry of the Cape’s landscape—its fierce elephants, soaring birds, and restless seas. He befriends the seasoned naturalist Mr. Fairburn and the pragmatic Mr. Swinton, whose lively discussions about local flora, fauna, and the complex relations with the Hottentots bring the continent to life. Their growing party, bolstered by bold characters such as Big Adam and the clever bushboy Omrah, sets out into the wilderness, promising a series of daring encounters and vivid discoveries that will test their courage and shape their young leader’s outlook.
