One night, while drifting along the Upper River’s banks, Bob experiences a sudden, almost mystical resolve to pursue the clergy, inspired by a fleeting glimpse of St. Augustine’s words. The decision propels him through ordination, a swift marriage to the austere Catherine, and the acceptance of a modest family living in Wendover—an appointment he questions even as he embraces it. This early journey sets the stage for Bob’s inner conflicts between idealism, duty, and the rigid expectations of his world.
