Description

Retired from a modest civil career, M. Rodamour spends his evenings strolling beneath the rust‑colored lime trees of Lafouillouze‑en‑Vexin, his thoughts as crisp as the autumn wind. Though he enjoys the comforts of a loyal dog, a pipe, and a modest pension, a lingering melancholy shadows his quiet routine. The small town’s centerpiece—a bronze statue of the revered Gigomard—mirrors his own feeling of being both admired and apart.

What truly occupies his mind, however, is the elusive invitation to dine at the baron’s grand house. The baron of Picpus hosts lavish soirées that define social standing in the province, and Rodamour dreams of tasting the celebrated wines and sharing the baroness’s elegant conversation. Yet each polite visit ends with the heavy doors remaining closed, leaving him to watch the baroness’s graceful silhouette drift past, a reminder of the world he yearns to belong to.
