About the author

John the Apostle was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus and, in Christian tradition, the son of Zebedee and the brother of James. The New Testament presents him as part of Jesus’ inner circle, alongside Peter and James, and later Christian tradition identifies him with the “beloved disciple.”

He is especially important in Christian history because his name became closely connected with some of the New Testament’s most influential writings: the Gospel of John, the letters known as 1, 2, and 3 John, and Revelation. While scholars and church traditions do not all describe that authorship in exactly the same way, his legacy has remained central to Christian thought about love, truth, and the identity of Jesus.

Tradition also holds that he lived to old age and spent time in Ephesus, making him stand out among the apostles as a figure linked not only with witness and martyr-era courage, but also with long memory and teaching. Across centuries of art, preaching, and devotion, he has been remembered as both a close companion of Christ and a lasting voice of spiritual depth.
