Born in Roman Britain, probably in the late fourth century, Patrick is believed to have been kidnapped as a teenager and taken to Ireland as a slave. After several years, he escaped, but later returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary.
Traditional accounts link him closely with the spread of Christianity in Ireland, which is why he became known as the island’s patron saint. Over the centuries, stories about him grew far beyond the surviving historical evidence, blending biography, faith, and legend.
Patrick is also remembered through writings traditionally associated with him, especially the Confessio and the Letter to Coroticus, which help shape the picture of a determined, deeply religious man. His life has inspired centuries of devotion, storytelling, art, and celebration, especially around Saint Patrick’s Day.
