Behind one of the world’s biggest food and drink companies is a story that began with a life-saving infant cereal in the 1860s. The business grew from that early nutritional breakthrough into a global group with products spanning coffee, confectionery, pet care, and bottled water.
Founded on the work of Henri Nestlé, a German-born pharmacist who settled in Vevey, Switzerland, the company traces its roots to 1867, when he developed an infant food designed to help babies who could not be breastfed. In 1905, his business merged with the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company, creating the foundation of the modern Nestlé group.
Over the decades, Nestlé expanded far beyond baby food into chocolate, dairy, coffee, prepared foods, and many other categories. It is now widely recognized as one of the world’s largest food and beverage companies, with a long international history and a portfolio that reaches across everyday grocery staples as well as specialty brands.
The portrait shown here is of Henri Nestlé, the company’s namesake and original founder. Although Nestlé is a corporation rather than an individual author, its origin story begins with his effort to improve infant nutrition and build a business around practical food innovation.
