Born on Prince Edward Island in 1874, Lucy Maud Montgomery grew up in Atlantic Canada and drew deeply on its landscapes, communities, and rhythms in her fiction. She published poems and stories early, but her lasting breakthrough came with Anne of Green Gables in 1908, the first book in the series that made Anne Shirley famous around the world.
Montgomery went on to write many novels, short stories, and journals, including the Emily books and other works set in and around Prince Edward Island. Readers have long been drawn to the warmth and vivid detail of her writing, along with the way she balances charm with loneliness, ambition, and the inner lives of girls and women.
She died in 1942, but her work remains central to Canadian literature and continues to be adapted for stage and screen. For many readers, her books offer both comfort and emotional honesty: stories filled with beauty, imagination, and the sense that ordinary places can become unforgettable.
