A longtime center for earth science in Illinois, this state survey studies the ground beneath everyday life—from water and energy resources to hazards, maps, and the geologic history of the state. Its work connects research with practical decisions that affect public safety, environmental quality, and economic development.

Founded in 1905, the Illinois State Geological Survey is part of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois. Its mission is to provide accurate, objective earth science research and information that supports Illinois communities, natural resources, and public decision-making.
The survey’s staff carry out both basic and applied research in geology. Their work includes compiling geologic maps, managing geological data for the state, and studying issues such as groundwater, energy resources, environmental change, and natural hazards.
Over time, the survey has built a strong public-facing role as well as a research one. Alongside scientific projects, it shares information about Illinois geology through publications, data resources, and outreach, helping make complex geologic questions useful and understandable for agencies, industries, educators, and the public.
