About the author

George Wharton Edwards was an American impressionist painter, illustrator, and writer born in Connecticut in March 1859. Alongside his art career, he became a prolific author of books on travel and historical subjects, bringing an illustrator’s attention to atmosphere and detail.

His work often focused on places with a strong visual character—old cities, cathedrals, landscapes, and regions shaped by history. That blend of artist and storyteller gave his books a distinctive appeal, especially for readers drawn to descriptive journeys through Europe and early America.

Edwards died on January 18, 1950. Today he is remembered not only for his paintings and illustrations, but also for a long shelf of books that joined careful observation with a strong sense of place.
