About the author

Born in Washington, D.C., in 1877, Charles Haven Ladd Johnston was a poet, author, and later a real estate broker. He studied at Harvard and for a time taught English at both Harvard and MIT, giving him a strong literary footing before he became best known for popular history and adventure writing.

Johnston wrote a long list of energetic, story-driven books about American exploration, warfare, and frontier life, including Famous Frontiersmen and Heroes of the Border, Famous Indian Chiefs, Famous Discoverers and Explorers of America, and Famous Privateersmen and Adventurers of the Sea. Contemporary accounts said he traveled widely in North American wilderness regions to better understand the people and landscapes he wrote about, which helps explain the firsthand, action-centered feel of his work.

He died in 1943. Though not widely remembered today, his books remained accessible through public-domain and library collections, and they still offer a lively example of early 20th-century historical writing for young and general readers.
