Soames Forsyte steps out of the Knightsbridge Hotel in May 1920, intent on a quiet stroll to a Cork Street gallery. The war has left him wary of cabs and even more wary of the shifting social order, yet his considerable fortune still cushions his anxieties. As he walks, his thoughts drift from taxes and wartime profiteering to the fragile peace that now surrounds him, revealing a man both proud of his property and unsettled by change.
He is due to meet his daughter, the spirited young Fleur, at four o'clock, and their impending encounter frames the narrative. Soames' reflections on his wife's wartime absence and his own rigid ideals expose the cracks in a family bound by convention. Through his eyes we glimpse a world where old values clash with a new, restless generation, setting the stage for a subtle but compelling family drama.
