Description

In a quiet Alpine valley shadowed by snow‑capped peaks, the ordinary rhythms of village life are upended by the distant drums of war. Madame Bretton watches the river flow while her children, Marie and Pierre, and their faithful St. Bernard, Hector, take on the chores once handled by their fathers. With the men gone to the front, the youngsters find themselves thrust into adult responsibilities—tending goats, caring for gardens, and keeping the household afloat.

Against this backdrop, the valley’s true lifeblood is revealed: silkworms thriving among rows of white mulberry trees. From a young age the children have learned which leaves the tiny spinners prefer, turning a humble grove into a delicate industry that sustains the whole community. Their daily labor weaves together hope and heritage, showing how a simple craft can bind a people together even in hardship.

The story follows Marie and Pierre as they navigate the challenges of growing up too quickly, discovering the quiet strength of tradition and the promise of a future woven from silk.
