Description

A reflective voice opens the tale, an old man looking back from 1747 on a life tangled with strange events that began long before he even knew the people involved. He paints a vivid picture of Starkey Manor in the bleak Trough of Bolland, a crumbling fortress of stone and timber surrounded by ancient, leaf‑less woods and a rugged landscape that still bears the scars of centuries‑old raids. The manor’s once‑grand rooms have been turned into barns and storage, yet the squire and his wife bring a touch of elegance, filling the cold stone with rare Continental curios and the warm glow of log fires.

Through this setting the narrator introduces Lucy, a poor girl whose family history is shrouded in mystery. A recent letter hints at her hopes of a marriage to a distinguished foreign officer, a prospect that promises both social elevation and hidden complications. As the squire returns to a decaying estate, the stage is set for a story of love, loss, and the lingering ghosts of a once‑great house.

About the author

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell

1810–1865

A sharp-eyed Victorian novelist, she wrote with warmth and honesty about factory towns, family life, and the pressures of class and poverty. Her books, including Mary Barton, Cranford, and North and South, still feel lively because they care so deeply about ordinary people.
