Description

A ruthless plague has seized the land, turning its victims into scarlet‑stained corpses within minutes. In response, the daring Prince Prospero gathers a thousand of his most spirited courtiers and withdraws to an opulent, fortress‑like abbey he has sealed from the outside world. Inside the walls, the fear of disease is replaced by endless revelry: music, dancers, jesters, and a banquet that promises to drown the surrounding horror in luxury.

To celebrate their seclusion, the prince stages a grand masked ball set within a sequence of seven uniquely colored chambers, each bathed in the glow of firelight through tinted glass. The final, black‑velvet room glows ominously red, and an enormous ebony clock dominates its wall, its solemn toll forcing the orchestra to pause each hour. As the revelers dance beneath the shifting hues, the atmosphere feels both exuberant and eerily foreboding, hinting that the fortress’s glittering defenses may not be enough to keep death at bay.

About the author

Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe

1809–1849

A master of mystery and the macabre, he helped shape the modern detective story while giving classic Gothic fiction some of its darkest, most unforgettable images. His poems and tales, including "The Raven" and "The Tell-Tale Heart," still feel vivid, eerie, and surprisingly modern.
