Description

The story begins with an unexpected reunion in a quiet library, where a visitor in Martian armor appears before an old friend during a friendly chess match. The newcomer, unmistakably the legendary Warlord of Mars, explains that he has finally managed to transport objects across the void, allowing him to be seen in his true Martian guise. Their conversation quickly shifts from nostalgia to the curious game that the red planet’s warriors play—a strategy contest that mirrors Earth’s chess but carries far higher stakes.

As the two men settle into a new round, the narrative introduces Tara, a fierce Heliumite, and hints at the elaborate societies that populate Barsoom. Through vivid description and sharp dialogue, the opening sets up a world where honor, rivalry, and the strange allure of a cosmic board game intertwine, inviting listeners to step onto the chessboard of an alien world and wonder what moves lie ahead.
