Description

This collection gathers the original folk narratives that once echoed through the valleys of Sajó, preserved in the careful hand of a 19th‑century collector. The stories open with a vivid tableau—a towering tree whose branches cradle apple, plum, cherry and countless other fruits, all hanging from a pendulum that jingles with ninety‑nine tiny tales. In the first tale a poor man on his deathbed summons his three sons, charging them to recover the sun and the moon that have been stolen, and promising that the one who succeeds will be crowned king.

The youngest brother, mocked by his older siblings for choosing a shabby foal and a rusted iron sword, relies on quick wit rather than splendor. Setting out, he leads the trio across enchanted realms—silver bridges, mist‑shrouded mountains, and the lair of a twelve‑headed dragon that guards a moon‑lit steed. Along the way the tales weave humor, moral puzzles and the timeless clash between humble ingenuity and brute strength, inviting listeners to wander the magical world of Hungarian oral tradition.
