Transcriber's Note:
The book follows two Victorian travelers who set out on foot across the Western Highlands and islands, refusing the polished narratives of typical guidebooks. Their narrative is unflinching, noting rain‑soaked paths, cramped inns, and the sheer effort of walking where coaches or steamers would have been easier. Yet this very perseverance lets them linger at remote lochs, craggy cliffs, and quiet villages that most visitors skim over.
Their observations turn from scenery to the lives of the crofters, describing the recent Crofters’ Act, rent reductions, and the uneasy balance between landlords and tenants. Through candid anecdotes—such as a tenant’s courtroom victory and a last‑minute deer‑meat ration—they reveal a society on the brink of change. The result is a travelogue that is as much a social document as a portrait of a beautiful, weather‑worn landscape.
