Description

On a bright June Saturday the gates of Bercy thrum with the clatter of carts, wagons, and the smell of coal and hay as traders rush to reach Paris before Sunday. Amidst the bustle stands a faded caravan, its canvas patched with fragments of Greek, German, Italian and French, hinting at a long, wandering life. Inside, a frail young mother lies on a thin mattress while her thirteen‑year‑old daughter, Perrine, watches over a sturdy grey donkey named Palikare, coaxing it away from the straw of a nearby cart. The pair’s mixed‑race appearance and quiet determination set them apart in the crowded scene.

They are bound for the customs house, hoping to cross the city’s threshold before the inspection, but hunger and illness threaten their fragile hope. Perrine’s steadfast care for Palikare and her protective love for her mother reveal a resilience that drives the caravan forward. As the sun climbs, the reader is drawn into their modest quest for safety and a glimpse of a new life in Paris.
