Description

A young woman named Billy finds herself adrift after the death of the aunt who raised her, inheriting a modest fortune but little guidance. When she reaches out to the firm's senior partner, Mr. Harding, for help, the conversation reveals her fierce independence, her sense of humor, and the deep loneliness that shadows her now‑empty home. Billy’s stubborn pride clashes with the kindness offered, and she wrestles with the idea of moving in with the Harding family while clinging to a name that ties her to a mysterious childhood friend of her late father.

Caught between memories of a vanished family and the possibility of new connections, Billy hints at a distant figure—her namesake—who might offer a lifeline. The first act sets a tender, bittersweet tone, inviting listeners to follow her search for belonging, the gentle humor that steadies her, and the quiet hope that a stranger’s letter could change the course of her life.

Best known for creating Pollyanna, she wrote stories whose cheerfulness and emotional warmth made her one of the most popular American novelists of her day. Before turning to fiction, she trained seriously as a singer, and that sense of feeling and performance carries through her work.
