Description

A young boy narrates the first days of his life from a cramped London house, where a midwife declares his birth at midnight on a Friday to be a bad omen. His mother’s sudden death leaves him in the care of a stern step‑father and a handful of eccentric relatives, including the kindly Aunt Betsey who offers a glimpse of comfort and encouragement. The narrator’s early memories are colored by the mix of harsh discipline and fleeting moments of warmth that hint at the resilience he will need.

School introduces him to new friends and teachers, each shaping his view of the world in different ways. He discovers a love for storytelling and a yearning to understand the people around him, even as the adults around him prove both protective and oppressive. These formative experiences set the stage for a journey of self‑discovery, ambition, and the search for belonging.
