Description

A young boy named Val narrates life on the edge of the South African veld, where his family has turned a rugged kopje into a fledgling homestead. Together with his brother Bob, they tend an orchard of apple and pear trees shipped from England, share meals with a stout Dutch Boer, and learn the hard rhythms of water‑driven irrigation and frontier labor. The everyday bustle of unpacking crates, coaxing oxen, and listening to the distant clatter of guns hints at a world on the brink of conflict.

As the boys scramble to help their father ready the settlement, the sense of adventure mixes with a looming unease—mounted men are spotted beyond the hill, and the promise of peace feels fragile. Through Val’s eyes we feel the excitement of youthful ambition, the camaraderie of strangers turned allies, and the raw beauty of a landscape that demands both courage and care. The story captures a vivid slice of colonial life before the larger war erupts, inviting listeners to experience the hopes and hardships of those early days.
